Hedge Laying Project - Appeal hits 50% Target in first few weeks

August 13, 2019

We are really pleased to announce that we are making great progress towards hitting our target to raise enough money to allow the first stage of the Hedge Laying process to start in  Dec / Jan....

If you can help us reach our target please see how to donate below......

The “Friends of Park Fields” are working to raise money to enable the hedge between Wood Lane and Park Fields to be properly laid.

The Plan: After seeking expert advice, the best solution for the hedge would be that it is professionally laid along the entire length over a period of 4 years. The Blackthorne would be cut back to allow access to the field side of the hedge. If we can raise £1380 to fund the first stage, the work will be planned to start in Jan 2020, with the other three stages completed in the following years.

We have a target to raise a contribution of £700, which will then enable us to apply for matched funding grants. Your contribution will make a real difference to how quickly we can deliver the project.

Hedge laying Benefits

Over time, hedges become tired, begin to look unsightly and are difficult to maintain. They develop weak growth, open up at the bottom, become top heavy and the habitat for wildlife is severely diminished.  Eventually the hedge will die.

Good management of the hedge line is essential to maintain a healthy productive and attractive hedge. Flailing the hedge only makes things worse and laying the hedge is the only way to secure it’s long term future. Hedge laying should ensure a healthy vigorous hedge for up to 15 to 20 years. If done in conjunction with regular cutting it will provide:

-     A continuous bushy and vigorous hedge

-     Nesting sites for birds and habitats for invertebrates, small mammals and amphibians.

-     Blossom for Bees and berries providing food for birds, invertebrates and small mammals

If appropriate management is not carried out the hedge will:

-     Become overgrown in parts, with gaps and dead wood in others

-     Become unattractive difficult to manage and provide poor habitats

-     Become unproductive providing little blossom, few berries and reduced nesting sites for birds
